Tampa Bay Water is the only utility in the United States that blends all three of groundwater, river water and desalinated seawater — roughly 53% / 43% / 4% — and it shifts that mix with the rainfall. Its own words: when river water is plentiful, it uses more of that supply and less of the others.
So a plumbed appliance here is aiming at a moving target. The finished water is hard — the City of Tampa reports 185 mg/L, about 10.8 grains per gallon — but the useful fact is that its chemistry changes through the year rather than sitting still. The utility spent $3,500,000 on a regional alkalinity adjustment facility for exactly that reason: to stop the blend attacking the pipework it runs through. An ice maker, a dishwasher heating element and a steam-oven boiler all concentrate whatever is in the water this month.
And then there is the air. Mean dew point at Tampa International reaches 76.0°F in August and stays at or above 72°F from June through September. Dew point is the number that matters for refrigeration, not relative humidity: it is the temperature at which moisture condenses, so for a third of the year any surface colder than the mid-70s is wet. That is what sweats a door gasket, corrodes a panel-ready hinge and puts water inside a cabinet that has no leak at all.
